Crater Lake day trip from the Rogue Valley: routes and seasonal access
Plan a Crater Lake day from Medford, Ashland or Grants Pass around the roads and viewpoints actually open. Choose a rim visit first, then add driving or walking only if conditions allow.

Compare your choices
| Day plan | Choose it when | What controls the plan |
|---|---|---|
| Rim Village visit | You want a lake-view destination with a simpler itinerary. | Check NPS access to Highway 62 and Rim Village, weather, visibility and available services. Lake views depend on conditions. |
| Rim Drive viewpoints | You have more time and the relevant road segments are open. | Check the North Entrance and each Rim Drive segment separately. Seasonal snow and construction can change the route. |
| A walk at the rim | The selected trail is open and its surface and effort fit your group. | Use NPS trail information. Do not substitute a lake-access plan: NPS says Cleetwood Cove is closed for the 2026 construction season. |
Start with the south-side access check
From the Rogue Valley, compare your route to the park with Oregon TripCheck, then read NPS road status. Do not let a navigation app's shortest route override a closed seasonal entrance. Check again before the return. This guide does not assign a fixed drive time because starting location, traffic, stops and snow conditions differ.
Summer and snow-season plans are different
A full rim-driving day depends on seasonal road access; a winter visit needs a different itinerary and equipment. NPS says the North Entrance and Rim Drive normally close by November 1 or earlier with significant snow. Use the current road table, forecast and webcams before choosing a viewpoint plan. An open entrance does not guarantee visibility or every park service.
The 2026 lake-access limitation
As checked October 4, NPS says Cleetwood Cove Trail is closed all season for major construction. Do not build this year's day around walking down that trail or a lake trip that depends on it. Choose an available rim viewpoint or an open trail instead, and recheck the park's notice for the season of your visit.
Fuel, food and the return
Plan fuel and meals before entering the park; concession schedules vary by season. Download your route and park information before departure because cell coverage is unreliable. Check the park's current entrance-fee information, weather and traction requirements, and leave enough daylight for the return. A park day is separate from a Rogue Valley city outing.
