What the walk involves
From the Upper trailhead, climb to the plateau on the 2.5-mile round trip described by BLM, gaining about 736 feet. The first mile has gravel surfacing and the final quarter mile natural tread. BLM also describes an optional 0.75-mile rim loop on top; include that extra distance only if you choose it.
The shorter of the two plateau climbs, with big views and seasonal wildflowers.
What makes this trail distinct
The broad top opens views over the valley and seasonal wildflowers. BLM estimates two to three hours for the main hike and notes that this summit tends to draw more people than Lower. Muddy conditions make Upper particularly slick. There is no drinking water, dogs are not allowed, and the cliff edges and vernal-pool habitat require staying on established tread.
Before you set out
Steep stretches, exposed cliff edges, no water and no dogs. Stay on trails around vernal pools.
